Thinking Of Popping The Question? Here's How To Do It Right!

Image by Travis Swan on FlickrIf your relationship is going well and you’re thinking of taking it to the next level, it’s time you started to think about getting married. Marriage is a wonderful union, a chance to make vows and promises to each other as well as an excuse for a good old fashioned knees-up! Traditionally it is customary for the man to propose to the woman, although it is done the other way round too. If you’re thinking of popping the question then it pays to think through how to do it first. Here’s our guide to getting it right, and securing a ‘yes’!

Are You Sure?

Without wanting to rain on your parade, your first step is to be absolutely sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. A marriage proposal should be carefully thought out, and not carried out on a whim. Many people propose as a way to ‘fix’ a broken relationship, and while it may well make things better for a while, unless you are sure you are with the right person for you then it’s likely to end in tears.

Get Prepared

If you are happy that you are proposing for the right reasons, your next step is to think about how you are going to do it. If your girlfriend is a traditionalist then she may expect you to ask her father’s permission first, in which case you’d better take him out for a pint! If not, and many people see this as quite an old-fashioned idea these days, then it’s time to start thinking about how to pop the question. Think about romantic places that mean something to you both. How about the place that you first met? Or perhaps take her on a romantic stroll, or a boat trip? Whatever you think of, it’s important that she doesn’t suspect anything so that it will be a nice surprise when you ask the question.

The Ring

Naturally, you are going to need a ring to seal the deal! It’s a good idea to choose something traditional such as a beautiful diamond solitaire ring, or a sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds. As for the ring itself, choose white gold or gold for something that will last forever. Down the line, it’s worth getting it insured if you spend a lot of money on it. Some people choose a temporary ring and then take their girlfriend to a jewelry shop to let them choose their own – it depends on how well you know her taste! Have the ring presented in a beautiful box for when you ask the question, or think of a more original way of presenting it!

The rest, we are afraid, is up to you! Think carefully about what you want to say, and how you want to say it. Some people deliver a huge speech, while others simply ask ‘will you marry me?’ Some people drop down on one knee, and others don’t – it totally depends on how you want to do it.

Fingers crossed, she’ll say yes, and then you can get busy with the important job of planning the wedding!
